  • Course overview

    The course examines Yoga Nidra in depth, from both a classical and a contemporary perspective, providing a comprehensive foundation for experiencing and teaching Yoga Nidra.

    Students of this course are required to expand their existing practice and investigate different approaches, both for their own benefit, and to enable them to teach this wonderful method of extreme relaxation to others with authority and competence.

  • Course aims

    The primary aim of the course is to expand and deepen your understanding and experience of some highly respected different approaches to Yoga Nidra, both for your personal benefit and to enable you to introduce the practice to others.

    During the course you will study, practice and compare different approaches to Yoga Nidra, leading to a deeper understanding and experience of both classical and contemporary perspectives. The required hours of practice and theory will guide you on your unique journey of the practice, whilst simultaneously preparing you to guide others on their journeys.

    On successful completion of the course, you will be equipped to offer well-informed, safe teaching to fellow yoga teachers, health care professionals, students and individuals. You will also have gained greater insight into yourself and the extraordinary gifts of the practice of Yoga Nidra.

    As the number of well-trained teachers grows, we can bring this wonderful healing tool to an ever-increasing number of people, including those with no experience of yoga.

    The course is suitable for yoga teachers, trainee yoga teachers, yoga students, individuals and complementary health care professionals who are committed to deepening their practice and understanding of Yoga Nidra, either in preparation for teaching or purely for self-development.

    The required reading and coursework will encourage you to think for yourself and clarify your own thoughts, feelings and experience regarding Yoga Nidra practice and teaching, within a clear framework of guidelines contained in the course text, required readings and required/recommended audio CDs.

  • Daily practice and Yoga Nidra Diary

    In addition to the coursework assignments, establishing a daily Yoga Nidra practice using the required audio recordings and keeping a Yoga Nidra diary are key elements of this course. This commitment to practice is absolutely essential to the experience and understanding of Yoga Nidra.

    You will be required to record your practice for the duration of the course in a Yoga Nidra diary; a template for this is provided.

  • How long will it take to complete the course?

    The average time needed to complete the course is 100 hours, to be completed 6 months from enrolment. This breaks down as follows:

    Average 30 minutes daily Yoga Nidra practice (15 hours per month)

    Average 2.5 hours weekly research and assignments (10 hours per month)

    There will inevitably be days when a 30-minute practice or study time isn’t possible, and the 6-month completion deadline allows for this.

  • Do I have time to do this course justice?

    Only you can know the answer to this question, so please consider it fully before enrolling. Bear in mind that daily Yoga Nidra practice will enable you to be more productive and relaxed in every aspect of your life. When you enrol, you are committing yourself to a minimum of 60 hours of deep relaxation over the next 6 months, and around 40 hours of study for your assignments.

    The return on your investment of time and money will be a more relaxed, productive and loving version of yourself, with the necessary experience and skills to guide others in the practice of Yoga Nidra.

    Module 1 – History and development of Yoga Nidra; Yoga Nidra – defining what it is and what it is not; is Yoga Nidra a form of hypnosis?; comparing classical and contemporary approaches to the practice; structure of Yoga Nidra practice; developing your own practice

    Module 2 – The physiology of relaxation; stress and brainwaves; sankalpa, rotation of consciousness, opposites, visualisations; meditation and Yoga Nidra; the physical benefits of Yoga Nidra; the mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of Yoga Nidra

    Module 3- Recorded Yoga Nidra scripts; Yoga Nidra without a script; Yoga Nidra scripts for ‘live’ practice; creating your own Yoga Nidra script and recording; koshas, chakras and symbols; mantras and chants; silence

    Module 4 – Introducing Yoga Nidra to students; Yoga Nidra workshops; one-to-one sessions; Yoga Nidra for specific conditions; Yoga Nidra for children and young people; adverse reactions

  • Assignments - What to expect

    Each module has 4 assignment questions – these include essays, workshop plans and Yoga Nidra scripts. None of the questions are multiple choice; all questions require understanding of the course text, reference to additional recommended texts, plus your own experience, opinion and rationale. None of it is rocket science, but it does demand thoughtful planning, a little creativity and basic computer skills.

    Clear guidelines are given (e.g. format, min/max word guide). Successful completion of the previous assignment is required before continuing to the next. Assignments that ignore the guidelines or are below standard will be returned ungraded with clear feedback as to why it needs to be resubmitted.

  • Handouts

    Some assignments require the creation of relevant teaching aids and promotional materials for your classes and workshops. This preparation will allow you to focus on your teaching and encourage your students to develop their own practice, supported by clear instructions and resources to refer to.

  • What about teaching practice and observation?

    All students are strongly advised to attend a workshop, either with Jane or with another experienced teacher trainer.

  • I don't want to teach, I want to do this for personal self-development

    That’s fine – the assignments you will be required to do are specific for personal development and self-inquiry, without reference to teaching Yoga Nidra.
